Collage can be as simple or as complex as the artist wishes it to be.
One of the world’s most well-known artists, Henri Matisse, coined the term “painting with scissors.” Matisse began as a painter, but due to complications from cancer surgery, he became confined to a wheelchair. It was during this time that he began “painting with scissors.” He created masterpieces on a grand scale and even designed a cathedral — together with the robes for the priests.
Building upon the ideas of Matisse and other artists regarding collage, students will learn composition, color, the rule of thirds and other design principles. Students will create at least one finished piece of work through collage and paint. We will also discuss how collage can influence their work with other media.
Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
