“Painting with scissors” is how Henri Matisse famously described his late-career approach to cut-paper collage.  In this one-day workshop, we’ll embrace that idea by exploring collage as a form of painting – using scissors, paper, color, shape, and composition instead of a traditional brush and canvas.

Participants will discover how simple cut shapes can become expressive images and dynamic compositions.  Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, we’ll explore Matisse-inspired techniques including cutting directly into paper, working with positive and negative shapes, layering color, creating rhythm and movement, and developing a composition intuitively.

The workshop encourages experimentation rather than perfection.  We’ll consider how scale, color relationships, repetition, texture, and unexpected combinations can transform ordinary pieces of paper into something visually compelling.

No previous art experience is required.  Whether you are new to collage or an experienced artist looking to approach composition in a different way, this workshop offers an opportunity to slow down, experiment, and discover the painter within the collage artist.

Come ready to cut, arrange, rearrange, and trust your instincts.

You may not pick up a paintbrush all day – but you’ll still be painting.
