The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards (TAG) is proud to present a summer-long exhibit for the community. “Out of the Box: Sculpting with Cardboard” is an exploration into the limitless creative possibilities of cardboard as a medium for artmaking. See Greensboro artist John Gibbs create his stunning representational and abstract sculptures during a special artist residency in our Doris P. Deal Gallery. At the same time, immerse yourself in the creative worlds of Efland-based father/son duo and puppeteers Jeghetto, who use cardboard and unexpected reclaimed materials to build monumental sculptures and intricate marionettes in a contemporary style. Don’t miss the geometric, faceted sculptures of High Point-based artist Jonathan Vizcuna. We invite the entire community to join us in creating cardboard art all summer.
This project was supported by The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro and High Point Arts Council, a division of the Designated County Partner, with funding from the North Carolina Arts Council. Stay tuned for free workshops and classes to be announced and get the chance to feature your own art in the gallery during our special closing reception on August 29 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
“This exhibition is really about engaging the community, inviting everyone into the gallery, and demonstrating that art is for everyone,” says curator Kathryn Drum. “Sculpture and art-making are often associated with expensive materials and equipment, yet cardboard can often be found for free around the house and is an incredibly versatile medium. With a little creativity and thinking outside the box, anyone can create art out of the boxes we’d typically recycle or discard.”
